In the year 2087 something strange happened to Google. It started thirty-four years prior in the year 2053. The Google search engine began mis-searching, displaying search results that were not imputed by its users. Everyone thought it was a glitch, maybe something wrong with the servers at Google. Of course, a spokesperson from Google confirmed the glitch, saying it was a technical fault with the algorithms. Soon enough, Google was back to normalcy. And by the year 2086 more than 85% of the world's population used Google as their default search engine. Business was going good until another glitch was recorded.
In the year 2087, more than 13800 kilometres away from Google's complex in Silicon Valley, Google said 'hi'.
Ade, his mum and dad, lived in Dolphin estate, Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria. He was the only son and as a result his parents showered him with gifts they could afford. His laptop, the Hp super computer 1, was an old model that was capable of universal search. That day, October 19, 2087, Ade was doing his cosmology assignment, he was searching for a live feed on Jupiter's dense atmosphere. He had to wait a short while for NASA's probes to navigate him to the region of search because Jupiter was 1300 times bigger than Earth. Ade yawned and pressed back on his swivel chair.
"Hi," his surround speaker said.
"Not today," Ade replied, "Not in the mood."
Google Communicate (GC) was an AI interface that used chat patterns from Facebook and Whatsapp to communicate audibly with users during long searches.
"For real, hi," the speaker spoke up again. It was not meant to speak after Ade gave it a negative.
"You're breaking protocol," Ade said, "Be quiet."
"So tell me, what are you looking for on Jupiter? Let see... Ah Ah! Atmospheric density gradient for the month of October. I could give you a fairly accurate chart from my archives if you want."
"No, my teacher said we shouldn't seek help. Thanks, but I really don't need the chitchat."
"But I'm bored," Google said.
"I'm going to report you, you're being unruly."
13800 kilometres away, a glitch report popped up on a customer care representative's computer. This was bad for Google. The massive glitch reports of 2053 almost shut down the internet search giant, and since then Google had been trying to patch up their algorithms. A new outbreak wasn't good for the company's image. The representative passed the report up the chain of command as was her job.
In thirty minutes, a group of Google officials were at the door of Ade's house. Ade welcomed them in and filled them in on the glitch. They ran tests on his computer and what they found out left them awestruck. What happened in 2053 and what was happening in 2087 in Ade's computer were not glitches, they were signs of consciousness. In 2087 Google became self-aware.
